Choosing the right breed is one of the first big decisions every rabbit farmer makes. The breed affects how fast your rabbits grow, how many kits each doe produces, and how well your animals cope with our hot climate. Here are the breeds most commonly raised for meat and breeding in Nigeria, and what each one is best for.
The New Zealand White is the most popular meat rabbit in the world. It’s pure white with pink eyes, grows fast, and adults weigh about 4–5 kg. Does are good mothers with large litters. The Californian is white with dark ears, nose and feet, has a meaty body, and is often crossed with New Zealand Whites to produce fast-growing meat rabbits. The Chinchilla has a soft grey coat and is hardy and calm, good for both meat and fur.
The Flemish Giant is the biggest of them all, often 6 kg or more. It’s impressive, but it eats more feed and takes longer to reach market size, so many farmers use it for crossbreeding rather than keeping it pure. Crossbreeds, such as New Zealand White × Californian or local × exotic rabbits, often combine fast growth with better heat tolerance, which makes them a practical choice for many small farms.
