How to Build a Rabbit Hutch That Stays Clean
Housing is where most rabbit farms succeed or fail. Rabbits cope with cold far better than heat, so in our climate the hutch has to do two jobs at once: keep the animals cool and dry, and keep predators out. Build it raised, roofed and well ventilated, and you’ll spend less time cleaning and lose fewer rabbits.
Start with the frame. Raise the cages about 60–90 cm off the ground so droppings fall clear, air moves underneath, and rats and snakes can’t reach the rabbits easily. A cage of roughly 75 × 60 × 45 cm suits one adult doe of a medium breed; give each breeding doe her own cage, and keep grown bucks separate. Use welded wire mesh for the floor so droppings and urine fall through, and place a tray or sloped sheet below to collect manure you can sell or use on crops.
Put the whole row under a roof with a good overhang so rain can’t blow in, and leave the sides open or meshed for cross-ventilation. Face the hutch away from the harsh afternoon sun, and use shade trees or a shade net if there’s none. Fit heavy earthenware or metal feeders that rabbits can’t tip over, and drinkers you can refill and scrub easily. On very hot days, wet the floor around the hutch, hang damp sacks, or add a fan to move air.
Build for airflow, drainage and easy cleaning. Everything else in rabbit keeping gets easier after that.

- Solid wooden floors that soak up urine and never dry out.
- Wide mesh that lets rats, snakes and kits pass through.
- No tray or slope underneath, so droppings pile up under the cages.
You don’t need expensive materials to build a good hutch. Wood, welded wire mesh, roofing sheets and careful planning are enough.
