How to Start a Rabbit Farm in Nigeria: A Beginner’s Guide.
Why Start With Rabbits?
Rabbit farming is one of the most practical livestock businesses to start in Nigeria. To begin with, rabbits need very little space compared with goats or cattle. Secondly, they breed quickly, so a small start can grow into a real herd within a year. Their meat is lean and high in protein, and as a result more households, restaurants and hotels are asking for it. In addition, the manure and urine sell well as organic fertilizer. Because of all this, the best way to begin is small. In practice, most beginners start with a trio of one buck and two does. After a few litters, you can then grow the farm from your own stock.
Getting the Housing Right
Good housing is the most important decision you will make, mainly because rabbits cope badly with heat. Therefore, keep cages raised about 60–90 cm off the ground. Furthermore, build a roofed shed with open or mesh sides so air flows freely. Meanwhile, protect the rabbits from direct sun, rain, rats and snakes. Next comes your stock. Above all, buy from a trusted breeder, and look for bright eyes, clean noses and ears, and a smooth coat. In addition, ask for the breed, age and parentage of every rabbit. Finally, make sure your buck and does come from unrelated lines, otherwise inbreeding will weaken your herd within a few generations.
Feeding, Breeding and Daily Care
Feed good-quality pellets and fresh forage, and never let your rabbits run out of clean water. In fact, a rabbit that cannot drink will soon stop eating altogether. As for breeding, does are usually ready at 5–6 months, while pregnancy lasts about 31 days. After that, kits are weaned at 6–8 weeks. Meanwhile, keep simple records for every doe, since those records show which animals actually earn their feed. In addition, keep the shed clean and dry at all times.
