How to Start a Rabbit Farm in Nigeria: A Beginner’s Guide.
Rabbit farming is one of the most practical livestock businesses to start in Nigeria. Rabbits need little space, breed quickly, and produce lean, high-protein meat that more households and restaurants are asking for. Their manure and urine are also valuable as organic fertilizer. The best way to begin is small: most beginners start with a trio of one buck and two does, learn how to handle, feed and breed them, then grow the farm from their own litters.
Good housing is the most important decision you’ll make, because rabbits don’t handle heat well. Keep cages raised about 60–90 cm off the ground, inside a roofed shed with open or mesh sides so air flows freely. Protect the rabbits from direct sun, rain, rats and snakes. Buy healthy stock from a trusted breeder: look for bright eyes, clean noses and ears, and a smooth coat. Ask for the breed, age and parentage of every rabbit, and make sure your buck and does come from unrelated lines.
Feed good-quality pellets and fresh forage, and never let your rabbits run out of clean water. Does are usually ready to breed at 5–6 months, pregnancy lasts about 31 days, and kits are weaned at 6–8 weeks.
